How to play
- Press Start Game, then steer with the arrow keys on desktop — or swipe on the board / use the on-screen direction buttons on mobile.
- Guide the snake to the food dot. Every piece eaten adds 10 points to your score and one segment to your tail.
- Avoid hitting the walls and your own growing tail — either collision ends the round instantly.
- You cannot reverse direction in one move (a snake cannot fold into itself), so plan turns one step ahead.
- After a game over, press Start again for an instant rematch and chase a new high score.
Game description
Snake is one of the oldest and purest ideas in video games — it conquered the world from arcade cabinets in the late 1970s and then again from Nokia phones in the 1990s, and it has never stopped being fun since. Our version keeps the recipe faithful: a growing snake, a single piece of food, four directions, and walls that show no mercy. Every bite makes you longer, and every added segment makes the board a little smaller and your own tail a little more dangerous. The genius of the design is that your success is literally the source of your difficulty.
On this page the snake plays exactly the way it should — responsive arrow-key control on desktop, and swipe or button controls on mobile — with no downloads and instant restarts. The early game is a stroll; the real sport begins when your tail takes up serious board space and every piece of food requires an approach plan and an exit route. High scores here are not luck: they are built from clean cornering habits, patient looping, and the discipline to take the long way around when the short way is a trap. Few games this simple reward technique this much.
Tips & tricks
- Travel along the walls and keep the middle of the board open — free space in the center is your emergency exit.
- Approach food so that your exit direction is already decided before you eat it, not after.
- When your snake gets long, move in an S-pattern or a big loop — it keeps your tail organized instead of scattered.
- Never chase food that sits right next to your own tail line; circle once and come in from the safe side.
- Panic turns cause most deaths: at high length, slow your decision-making down even though the snake keeps its pace.
Snake Game — quick answers
Why can't I turn the snake backwards?
A 180-degree turn would fold the snake into its own neck — instant death — so the game blocks it. Only left or right turns relative to your current direction are possible, which is why planning one move ahead matters.
Does the snake get faster as it grows?
In this version the speed stays steady — the difficulty comes entirely from your growing tail shrinking the usable board. That makes long games a test of routing skill rather than raw reflexes.
What is a good score in Snake?
Every food is 10 points, so 200 means 20 pieces eaten — respectable. Beyond 500, your snake occupies serious board space and every run becomes a planning exercise; players who pass that consistently have genuinely mastered the game.
